The act of calculating the average energy bill in the UK isn’t straightforward, as there are lots of factors to consider. Here, we take a look at what research currently shows and what the unprecedented rises in energy costs are likely to mean for you.

What is the average UK gas & electricity bill?

According to data from the UK government, the average gas bill in 2021 was £575 per year, which equates to £47.92 per month. For electricity, households paid an average of £764 per year or £64 per month for 3,600 kWh.

Therefore, the annual average gas and electricity bill in the UK was £1,339 in 2021, which is £112 per month. But as we all know, the prices of gas and electricity have skyrocketed in 2022. So how much should you be paying on average in the UK right now?

The unprecedented rise in gas and electricity prices in 2022

In April 2022, Ofgem announced that the UK price cap on energy was to increase from £1,277 to £1,971, a £693 increase for direct debit customers. Recent statistics show that this has led to the average household paying about £2,000 a year for energy, which is a huge increase from this time in 2021.

By the end of 2022, the cost of energy bills in the UK could be as high as £3,300, with prices continuing to rise at the start of 2023. Naturally, this is worrying for families throughout the UK. But what’s driving such an increase in prices?

A number of factors contribute to the price of energy. Right now, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has threatened supplies from Russia, which has driven a sharp increase in prices of energy all around the world.

What’s more, the demand for gas increased as the Covid pandemic eased and life returned to normal. While it certainly seems unfair, countries all around the world are struggling with increasing energy prices, and it could be some time before the costs return to pre-pandemic levels.
